that often get overlooked but not on this show now we started our show today on a somber note about Kenya battling floods but that’s not all that is happening in that country in Kenya’s Capital Nairobi students are setting an example for the world determined to fight for their right to breathe clean air they have launched a bamboo project to improve the air quality around their school which is located right next to Kenya’s largest dump site our next report gets you the details this is the dandora dump Kenya’s largest.
Dump site located east of the capital Nairobi 23 years ago this dump was declared full yet hundreds of trucks arrive daily to Heap more waste this nearly 50 acres of land receives more than 2,000 tons of waste every day armed with gardening hose and bamboo seedling Kenya’s younger generation has decided to take matter into their own hands these students study in a school near the dandora dump every morning smoke billows from the burning of refuse floating its way over to their school over time cases of respiratory illnesses
among students and teachers started increasing the damsite produces gas in the morning and also in the afternoon seeing is becoming a problem in the morning they produce me they produce fogs which really pollutes the environment produces bad smells which it seems as if somebody’s living in a toilet whereby you in a classroom funny enough but some of the challenges that really affect us is the the smell coming out from the DM site the smoke burning of those elements in there really produces spokes that also triggers
asthma asthma is a disease that it’s commonly known in D Secondary School the impacts of air pollution uh to all uh parts of our bodies including our brains our organs including our lungs uh actually impact on even children before they born uh young children uh it is really the best way to ensure that you do not um breathe polluted air is to minimize your exposure so the students launched a bamboo project to fight back more than 100 bamboo plantings do the mini Forest created around the school they hope fully grown bamboo would help help
filter the filthy air around the school my motivation of initiating babo project in the school was to mitigate the effects of dam site it really H pollute the that we breathe and with that I know it is going to reduce the cases of respiratory infections among the people in Dora community UNESCO hails bamboo trees as one of Nature’s finest air purifier this is because it has a high uptake of carbon dioxide now planting bamboo trees ensure ensures that there is a barrier that is provided in terms of the air that is
polluted coming through especially when you look at the fine particles as well as of course the bamboo being a plant ensures that there’s photosynthesis and in photosynthesis ensures that it’s producing oxygen where else also intaking carbon dioxide the publicly funded school has its fair share of challenges the project relies on donations to afford the seedlings that cost around 400 Kenya Shillings or around $3 each but the school management is determined to keep going until the entire 900 M wall that
separates it and the dump site is covered by bamboo trees the dandora secondary school is also planting other species of trees for better air circulation as the nor fraternity we have come to a conclusion in order to pick other some other species to come forward in order to plant them the species include jakaranda and the gelia the reason behind why you picking the species is that they are easy to plant easy to access the seedly and the the other Advantage is that the tree will be helpful in order to boost our air.
Circulation around our school since we are there since we are near to a it there are other challenges too vultures from the dump site are a nuisance at meal times students even have to guard their plates from being snatched the United Nations environment program deployed sensors to nairobi’s dandora Neighborhood from October 2023 to April 2024 to monitor pollution levels from the dump site out of the 166 days monitored only a mere 12 days met the wh guidelines of air air quality air pollution kills about 7

Paradise of the world it is now home to nearly 177,000 Lions despite several challenges Tanzania tops the African continent when it comes to Wildlife Conservation not just Lions but thousands of elephants leopards and Buffalos are also thriving in the country how did Tanzania achieve this feat our final report explains the wild Plains of Tanzania Echo with the Roar of wildlife Tanzania isn’t just a tourist hotspot it’s known for its iconic Landscapes and abundant wildlife and it also leads the charge in
wildlife conservation in a groundbreaking study released by The Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute it has been revealed that tan IIA is home to over 70% of Africa’s lion population this is information that has often gone unnoticed with the warping 177,000 Lions Tanzania is proudly wearing the crown as the lion Paradise of the world it’s five times more than South Africa which has 3,284 Lions Botswana is in third place with 364 lions and Kenya stands forth with 2515 lions and it doesn’t stop there there’s
also the presence of 24,000 leopards tanzania’s Wild Wonders extend to its buffalo population as well with a staggering 225,000 buffalos roaming free across its Plains and let’s not forget about the gentle Giants of the Savannah tanzania’s elephant population is also trumpeting with joy there’s a headcount of 60,000 Majestic elephants roaming the Wilderness but the question is is how has Tanzania achieved this feat experts say its conservation success is because of its policies and laws they have also
established robust conservation institutions lands have been earmarked specifically for conservation the authorities have also structured its conservation planning while the numbers look impressive there’s always the threat of human impact on Wildlife despite tanzania’s conservation efforts activities like AG culture and construction are encroaching on wildlife habitats it’s putting the well-being of our furry and feathery friends in danger there has been a significant decline in giraffes greater kudus and
puku but the Tanzanian government is setting up a plan to minimize human impact on Wildlife it plans to invest $1.5 million from the tourism Development Fund into conservation plans the government is also gearing up for the next Wildlife census it says it aims to protect not just lions and elephants but also hippos and crocodiles over 1.
8 million tourists flock to Tanzania last year they contributed aing $3.4 million to the economy the government’s goal is to host 5 million tourists annually by 2025 which seems well within reach so whether you’re a nature Enthusiast or a wildlife Wanderer Tanzania is the place to be it has become the heart of Africa’s conservation efforts so stay wild and stay tuned our story today is from Uganda where a tourist hotspot near the capital city of Cala is trying to preserve the practices of the buganda community amid the onslaught of modernization the
buganda community is one of the largest ethnic groups in East Africa our next report tells you how tourism is helping Uganda embrace the future without severing its ties with tradition away from the hustle and bustle of a city in the calm and soothing surroundings of mukono there’s a village that awaits to give you the taste of real Uganda this is the iaf cultural Village here visitors get to witness the traditions and cultural norms of the buganda people which is one of the largest ethnic groups in East Africa The Village’s 30-year-old founder
Aisha nanica believes the visitors crave an authentic Ugandan experience and with a tourist spot she aims to fill that Gap in uganda’s cultural tourism statistics have shown us that the tourist who comes to Uganda always wants to first you know to also okay well as they having uh game Park drives you know safaris and all that they would also want to have a feel of the culture you know of the culture of the country to know the people to eat the local food to learn a few you know words in in a local language you know to
show that I’m actually in that particular uh culture of that particular country you know so I really thought so hard that around here in the central we were missing you know a place like that you would take a tourist to experience a traditional life over Uganda so that is why I came up with this place here the tourists are greeted by traditional dancers and musicians they are then welcomed with freshly squeezed banana juice served in traditional cups during this day the tourists also get to relish conventional Delicacies
made of banana leaves the visitors are asked to eat food in mud fled Huts sitting on mats with their loved ones the practice mark vanda’s ageold tradition of communal eating uh people associate our culture Norms as anient backward these guys maybe weren’t understanding but trust me they really put in a lot of know knowledge you know in some of these things I mean it just it wasn’t just done out of the blue for example sitting with your children on the same you know the same M and have lunch it was a way of knowing your
children what are their habits the visitors are even encouraged to try their hand in cooking the food using traditional methods this days children do not know how to prepare food secondly they do not know how to dress thirdly they do not know how to behave a lot of culture and Norms are disappearing because of not knowing them like us who grew up in the era of strict culture and training we want to bring these things back amongst the people and you never know maybe the world will be a better place and it doesn’t stop here the village
offers more than a vacation experience to its visitors The Village guide offers counseling to women on marriage and family issues the employees teach tourists about traditional medicines and fishing among other skills to many visitors The Villages become a channel to connect with the Ugandan Roots because we have largely grown up in the city personally you know and you’ve overc concentrated on the books there’s been a hiup somewhere I feel like coming here to a cultural Village has now reconnected me kind of to my roots in
today’s fast moving World iaf cultural Village provides a warm touch of tradition and culture while preserving the traditions of Bugan people from Vanishing in this modern era now our final story is from South Africa where an African penguins are facing the threat of Extinction humans have become their biggest enemies as climate change threatens their colonies however conservationists have decided to fight for these penguins and they are taking the right to life for these birds to court our next report gets you all the
details look at these adorable creatures rolling on the rocky shores of South Africa these penguins hop around the water and call one another in short raspy barks African penguins live in seven colonies along the southwestern Coastline of Africa these gorgeous Birds attract numerous Spectators from across the globe however they seem unfazed by the people taking their pictures as they pin in the sunlight or watch over their eggs but these species are at the risk of facing extinction and experts say that this risk could turn into a reality in close
to a decade’s time there are only 8,750 breeding pairs of African penguins left if nothing is done to save them their entire species could vanish by 2035 penguins are vulnerable to Natural Predators like seed and certain types of Gull but their real enemies continue to be human beings as climate change threatens their existence storms and flooding endanger their colonies and with the shifting ocean currents and temperatures it becomes hard for the birds to access food Penguins depend on sardines and anchovies both of these fishes are also
a valuable commodity for the commercial fishing industry the South African government has tried to restrict fishing activities the noise and pollution from the shipping routs also add to the Penguin’s Wars but restricting fishing is a volatile issue over the last 15 years there have been experimental closures of fishing grounds the restrictions have cost the industry millions of dollars and hundreds of jobs but that hasn’t done much to save the birds so conservationists have launched campaigns to save the African penguins birdlife
South Africa and the South African foundation for the conservation of coastal birds have come together to protect these birds the organizations are taking legal action against the South African government the case is a first of its kind in South Africa they claim that the lawmakers have failed to adequately protect the endangered species the organizations argue that the government’s fishing restrictions are neither extensive nor enough to protect the Penguins they are now demanding meaningful and immediate implementation
of restrictions the journey ahead could be long and painful but conservationists in South Africa are not ready to give up the clock is ticking so they are pushing hard to ensure that these birds are a part of our future and don’t become history and that’s all from me keep watching first post . . . first post reports from the world’s second largest continent hello I’m Allison lrange a very warm welcome from Durban South Africa we get you the news and the newsmakers from Africa South Africa goes to the polls on
