What we need to do, is everybody comes together. It’s a shame that they take food and waste it so much because when you look even at the bins and things, how people waste the food it could help to feed people, it could get rid of pollution.
We could do so much if we had that little bit of help in our community. We started off ‘Keeping it Real’ when the pandemic started, and because of the issues, especially in the black community, we weren’t getting our own kind of food. So the things that we would like, like sweet potato, yam, pumpkin… And this is why we even set up the food bank.
Even though we say foodbank, it’s many, many things that we try and capture as well into it. We make the best of everything, just with food. We started out by giving to one person, but that one person fed maybe 20 people But when we started off, we started off with like about 70 to 100 people a week we were doing.
It just kept on growing and growing and growing. So basically we feed everybody! Every Tuesday we pick up from any supermarket who calls us and anywhere we go and then we sort it out. We also have our community fridges. where we can put things into the community fridge. It’s just wasted because even though it has like sell by date, or use-by dates, best before dates, as long as it’s best before you can still use it.
Not many people come to the walk-ins because a lot of our people are quite proud, so they won’t come. We’ve got about between 40 and 60 deliveries that we do every day with two drivers. It’s just nice to give back and we don’t charge for our bags. That’s, that’s a difference with us, we don’t charge.
There is tonnes and millions of wasted food that all of these supermarkets are throwing away. So whatever we get from these companies, we try to make a community have some of it. We cook and we share for everyone. That means everyone can enjoy themselves when they come. What we can’t use, somebody else could use.
And if we can’t use it, the earth can use it. Once we’ve finished cutting up and there’s enough, we’ll put it outside in the compost. Without the environment, there’s no us, is there really? So it’s important that we keep the environment healthy. Climate change is what’s changing now, what’s taking place in our earth.
Why are we just having empty land out there? When we could be using it for even simple little vegetable gardens? We were really grateful for that funding, to be honest with you, because it went a long way. With that funding, we helped to train another two people for our kitchen, so that we can have the Health and Safety hygiene certificate.
I only wish that more of the supermarkets will give us some more of the food and that we have more people that we could feed. We could feed everybody. It’s about also knowing how the the person is, if they’re okay, just having that conversation on the step with them. We need to, you know, reduce our carbon footprint.
And if this is a way of reducing it, if more people do these things then, you know, we are going to reduce it significantly, aren’t we? It is important to have more projects like this because again, it helps reduce poverty, it brings people together and we know about each other culture, how to cook different food.
It’s having the love for it, the love for the people. And I think that’s very important.

Communities are more powerful than they know and Keeping It Real shows us how people can come together to help each other while fighting climate change. Launched in partnership with the National Lottery Community Fund, the Mobilising Community Climate Action Project funded local projects that benefitted communities in Greater Manchester, Glasgow and Wales and the environment.

So that’s a really rare to see a garden which can produce vegetables. We received a grant which gave us a good boost to help tidy our garden. We purchased the actual planters and all the smaller equipment for the garden. You’ve got a sense of achievement when you’re eating your food, and I think it’s good for the environment as well.
We kind of started to build some foundation towards (being) self sufficient. We feel more confident of planning for more vegetable growing projects. It’s improved community ties, it’s good for people as wellbeing and their Mental Health. The group was established back in 1989.
They realised there’s not a lot of places for Chinese elderly to go and gather up because they have a lot of language barriers.
Sometimes they can learn from us, and sometimes we can learn from them. They are a lot of pensioners, like even before the climate change as concept, that were already living in this sustainable way – reusing their stuff, and then growing their own vegetable. I think it’s important for them to pass their knowledge down to the next generation and then to show the world of what they’re capable of doing.
