our Q&A this evening is all about Twee and forests which is one of me and
How can we restore our forests
and forests which is one of me and Veronica’s absolutely favorite topics.Veronica’s absolutely favorite topics we’re both I think. I would say massivewe’re both. I think. I would say massive Tree. Huggers yes. I feel like I’mTree Huggers yes .I feel like I’m comfortable saying that so the title ofcomfortable saying that so the title of the Q&A we’re going to have this eveningthe Q&A we’re going to have this evening is how can we stop deforestation andis how can we stop deforestation and restore our forests around the globe sorestore our forests around the globe so R both you and me worked on a bigR both you and me worked on a big beautiful Global Forest report Forestbeautiful Global Forest report Forest Pathways report recently but we were
Pathways report recently but we were talking in that report about this real
talking in that report about this real kind of Crisis point that our forests
kind of Crisis point that our forests are at um but we both look at very
are at um but we both look at very different bits of this big broad profile
different bits of this big broad profile of forest work that goes on here at WWF
of forest work that goes on here at WWF so before we move on to questions I
so before we move on to questions I thought maybe we’d do some introductions
thought maybe we’d do some introductions and tell people what we do what we do
and tell people what we do what we do here yeah
here yeah
absolutely
absolutely so I’m going to talk I guess about the
so I’m going to talk I guess about the science work and then and then hand over
science work and then and then hand over and we’ll talk about the bigger picture
and we’ll talk about the bigger picture stuff as well so my name’s Mary gagen
stuff as well so my name’s Mary gagen and I work in the science team here at
and I work in the science team here at WWF UK so looking at the broader
WWF UK so looking at the broader scientific evidence I guess for how our
scientific evidence I guess for how our forests are being impacted by climate
forests are being impacted by climate change and all of the different threats
change and all of the different threats and drivers of deforestation and how
and drivers of deforestation and how that kind of comes together to the
that kind of comes together to the picture of Def frustation that you see
picture of Def frustation that you see now um so I’m a scientist by background
now um so I’m a scientist by background and Veronica you look at a different but
and Veronica you look at a different but super super important area as well yeah
super super important area as well yeah so very nice to see you to meet you I am
so very nice to see you to meet you I am Veronica um and I am the global
Veronica um and I am the global deforestation and conversion free on our
deforestation and conversion free on our supply chains agenda in WWF
supply chains agenda in WWF International which as Mary says is a
International which as Mary says is a key agenda for our organization and is
key agenda for our organization and is making sure that we are working on the
making sure that we are working on the transformation of our food Food Systems
transformation of our food Food Systems and making more sustainable our
and making more sustainable our consumption and production patterns
consumption and production patterns which is a key thing if we want to
which is a key thing if we want to restore the forest and the other
restore the forest and the other ecosystems that we are living
ecosystems that we are living in so I think one of the things that um
in so I think one of the things that um was very clear to me when I joined WWF
was very clear to me when I joined WWF I’m a slightly newer Panda more recent
I’m a slightly newer Panda more recent Panda was yeah how much work there is
Panda was yeah how much work there is that goes on around how connected what’s
that goes on around how connected what’s happening in our forests are to our food
happening in our forests are to our food system so it might it might be a
system so it might it might be a surprise to some of our um some of our
surprise to some of our um some of our folks watching so we’re going to talk
folks watching so we’re going to talk about that a bit more later on um
about that a bit more later on um actually because we spent quite a lot of
actually because we spent quite a lot of time talking about trees actually I’m
time talking about trees actually I’m just G to go ahead and say
just G to go ahead and say that so um while we’re waiting for
that so um while we’re waiting for people to join and before we go on to to
people to join and before we go on to to the main Q&A um I thought it would be
the main Q&A um I thought it would be really good to actually talk about the
really good to actually talk about the trees that were near us when we when we
trees that were near us when we when we grew up CU I know we talked about this
grew up CU I know we talked about this and that you know I remember the trees
and that you know I remember the trees from my childhood and I think they were
from my childhood and I think they were really important in turning me into
really important in turning me into somebody who wanted to work on on the SS
somebody who wanted to work on on the SS behind our our um trees and I know we
behind our our um trees and I know we both grew up in cities but cities on
both grew up in cities but cities on opposite sides of the ocean so I grew up
opposite sides of the ocean so I grew up in Manchester um in the north of of
in Manchester um in the north of of England and the in quite a suburb and
England and the in quite a suburb and you know not not in a particularly green
you know not not in a particularly green part but there were these big beautiful
part but there were these big beautiful Elm trees all along the street that I
Elm trees all along the street that I lived on and when we were kids our whole
lived on and when we were kids our whole life revolved around these Elm trees we
life revolved around these Elm trees we played games hide and seek behind them
played games hide and seek behind them and we invented this whole world where
and we invented this whole world where people lived in the bark like you do
people lived in the bark like you do when you’re were a child and then when.when you’re were a child and then when when I was about 10 like a lots of trees
when I was about 10 like a lots of trees in the UK they got Dutch elm disease and
in the UK they got Dutch elm disease and I remember really clearly the whole
I remember really clearly the whole street having to be filed in W go and
street having to be filed in W go and suddenly these trees were kind of gone
suddenly these trees were kind of gone from my life so I remember those trees
from my life so I remember those trees really clearly when I was when I was a
really clearly when I was when I was a child but what what trees were you grew
child but what what trees were you grew up in a very different place yeah so
up in a very different place yeah so mine are is the tropical forest I was
mine are is the tropical forest I was from I am from bot and I grew up in bota
from I am from bot and I grew up in bota and there um my absolute favorite tree
and there um my absolute favorite tree is the jaruma tree which the scientific
is the jaruma tree which the scientific name is copia Pata um and yeah it’s
name is copia Pata um and yeah it’s something that really connects me to
something that really connects me to home whenever I’m in Colombia whenever I
home whenever I’m in Colombia whenever I see a jumo it connects me to what I’m
see a jumo it connects me to what I’m doing it reminds me of why I love nature
doing it reminds me of why I love nature so much and how important it is to
so much and how important it is to protect a trees and ecosystem so it’s
protect a trees and ecosystem so it’s been something that has been connecting
been something that has been connecting me to this sector and this field of work
me to this sector and this field of work since I was very very young so it has a
since I was very very young so it has a very personal meaning but professional
very personal meaning but professional meaning to me um and yeah it’s it’s a
meaning to me um and yeah it’s it’s a great memory that I have whenever I see
great memory that I have whenever I see them a Juma tree are they really big
them a Juma tree are they really big trees or they yeah they’re massive trees
trees or they yeah they’re massive trees they can have like green leaves or
they can have like green leaves or silver leaves U so they can call them
silver leaves U so they can call them like the white jumo or silver jumo which
like the white jumo or silver jumo which beautiful and sometimes they call it
beautiful and sometimes they call it like the bear claw because they look
like the bear claw because they look like a bear claw they’re massive they
like a bear claw they’re massive they have five yeah they have like big ones
have five yeah they have like big ones so yeah this it’s a great one it’s a
so yeah this it’s a great one it’s a great memory for
great memory for me yeah we I think um and share our
me yeah we I think um and share our share your memories of of the trees that
share your memories of of the trees that were around you when you were a child in
were around you when you were a child in the in the chat and we’d love to love to
the in the chat and we’d love to love to hear about more trees from your
hear about more trees from your childhood um so we really want to thank
childhood um so we really want to thank you for all your thoughts and questions
you for all your thoughts and questions so lots of you over over the past few
so lots of you over over the past few months have shown how How Deeply that
months have shown how How Deeply that you care about the trees and forests in
you care about the trees and forests in your lives and these issues that that
your lives and these issues that that we’re talking about um so we’re going to
we’re talking about um so we’re going to we’re going to dive in and talk a little
we’re going to dive in and talk a little bit
bit
Supporting UK Saltmarshes to Tackle Climate Change with Aviva
about the big cop going on at the moment I think how me which may I say Mary has
I think how me which may I say Mary has bravely just arrived from cop she just
bravely just arrived from cop she just landed from from a plane here so we’re
landed from from a plane here so we’re very grateful to have her and you have
very grateful to have her and you have all of the insights yes you have all of
all of the insights yes you have all of the insights from cop so we’re very much
the insights from cop so we’re very much looking forward how it was to hear how
looking forward how it was to hear how it was and and all of the events that
it was and and all of the events that happened around cop and so so trees
happened around cop and so so trees forests were a very big part of of this
forests were a very big part of of this cop I should say it’s still going on um
cop I should say it’s still going on um very often um the scientists tend to
very often um the scientists tend to leave before the whole conference
leave before the whole conference finishes because that’s when the the
finishes because that’s when the the real negotiations ramp up and we’ll be
real negotiations ramp up and we’ll be our friends who are in the negotiation
our friends who are in the negotiation teams will not be getting a lot of sleep
teams will not be getting a lot of sleep um over the next few nights um and big
um over the next few nights um and big shout out and hello hello to them and
shout out and hello hello to them and lots of love because they’re still
lots of love because they’re still working very hard so wwsp asks for
working very hard so wwsp asks for global leaders and businesses at this
global leaders and businesses at this cop was to really secure the end of
cop was to really secure the end of deforestation because something really
deforestation because something really big happened some of you fored Glasgow
big happened some of you fored Glasgow cop um that was in the UK two years ago
cop um that was in the UK two years ago will probably remember this there was
will probably remember this there was this big commitment with Glasgow leaders
this big commitment with Glasgow leaders declaration to commit to end
declaration to commit to end deforestation to Halt it and reverse it
deforestation to Halt it and reverse it by
by 2013 and actually in relation to the
2013 and actually in relation to the work that you do Veronica there was
work that you do Veronica there was quite an exciting announcement in
quite an exciting announcement in relation to to deforestation and
relation to to deforestation and conversion free action cop as well
conversion free action cop as well wasn’t there tell about that yeah
wasn’t there tell about that yeah absolutely so um it was a great news
absolutely so um it was a great news that the UK government through the defra
that the UK government through the defra department announced some additional
department announced some additional details on the UK due diligence
details on the UK due diligence regulation on Forest risk Commodities so
regulation on Forest risk Commodities so there are two points that we wanted to
there are two points that we wanted to highlight on this due diligence
highlight on this due diligence regulation because it’s been much um
regulation because it’s been much um waited for everybody we were expecting
waited for everybody we were expecting to to listen to what the UK government
to to listen to what the UK government had to say about this and so the forest
had to say about this and so the forest RIS Commodities scheme will be
RIS Commodities scheme will be introduced through the of schedule 17 in
introduced through the of schedule 17 in the environment act in 2021 and the
the environment act in 2021 and the secondary legislation is meant to
secondary legislation is meant to operationalize those Provisions um in
operationalize those Provisions um in the next parliamentary times and we got
the next parliamentary times and we got some more information on the full list
some more information on the full list of Commodities and the common in scope
of Commodities and the common in scope which will be non-dairy cattle products
which will be non-dairy cattle products so beef and leather cocoa palm and soy
so beef and leather cocoa palm and soy and this regulation is really critical H
and this regulation is really critical H because WWF has estimated that between
because WWF has estimated that between 2016 and 2018
2016 and 2018 around 21 million hectares so roughly
around 21 million hectares so roughly the area almost the size of the UK was
the area almost the size of the UK was required each year to meet UK demand for
required each year to meet UK demand for seven forestry Commodities alone so this
seven forestry Commodities alone so this is absolutely critical and we are very
is absolutely critical and we are very keen and hopeful that the UK government
keen and hopeful that the UK government can move ahead with the secondary
can move ahead with the secondary legislation that we so much need for to
legislation that we so much need for to advance on this agenda so that would
advance on this agenda so that would mean um essentially this was about
mean um essentially this was about ensuring that when we when we buy
ensuring that when we when we buy products in the UK we can be confident
products in the UK we can be confident that those products haven’t been
that those products haven’t been associated with legal deforestation
associated with legal deforestation because I think for a lot of people you
because I think for a lot of people you might not be aware that you could be
might not be aware that you could be buying something yeah that that could
buying something yeah that that could have been associated with land being
have been associated with land being cleared illegally
cleared illegally overseas um but I wanted to ask you
overseas um but I wanted to ask you about another part of of deforestation
about another part of of deforestation and conversion fre as well because it
and conversion fre as well because it that’s the that’s the legislation that
that’s the that’s the legislation that that addresses illegal deforestation but
that addresses illegal deforestation but actually there’s a bigger issue as well
actually there’s a bigger issue as well isn’t there that I know a lot of your
isn’t there that I know a lot of your your work is on because at the moment a
your work is on because at the moment a lot of our trade and a lot of our
lot of our trade and a lot of our financial and subsidy systems actually
financial and subsidy systems actually support the conversion of forest to grow
support the conversion of forest to grow food but that’s so do you want to tell
food but that’s so do you want to tell tell us a little bit more about that
tell us a little bit more about that issue so that so the legal deforestation
issue so that so the legal deforestation and and what sort of work we’re doing to
and and what sort of work we’re doing to try and ensure because really we need
try and ensure because really we need all deforestation to stop ultimately
all deforestation to stop ultimately don’t we yes and I I think as ww have
don’t we yes and I I think as ww have been we we’ve been working a lot um on
been we we’ve been working a lot um on reviewing and assessing the EU du
reviewing and assessing the EU du legislation which um is is as well very
legislation which um is is as well very relevant in the space and it’s covering
relevant in the space and it’s covering both illegal and legal deforestation
both illegal and legal deforestation mainly because of what Mary just
mainly because of what Mary just explained so we are hoping or we are
explained so we are hoping or we are identifying that the UK due diligence
identifying that the UK due diligence legislation as it is it’s only covering
legislation as it is it’s only covering illegal deforestation so there is a
illegal deforestation so there is a loophole to be addressed and and we need
loophole to be addressed and and we need to assess ways on how to then um
to assess ways on how to then um identify those legal ER ways of clear
identify those legal ER ways of clear and the Forest L because at the moment
and the Forest L because at the moment in many of the producing countries it’s
in many of the producing countries it’s not so easy to tell when the forestation
not so easy to tell when the forestation is illegal or legal um or many of the
is illegal or legal um or many of the legal Frameworks or regulations that are
legal Frameworks or regulations that are in place in those producing countries um
in place in those producing countries um are sometimes incentivizing
are sometimes incentivizing deforestation or do not have the strong
deforestation or do not have the strong robust Frameworks that we need so it is
robust Frameworks that we need so it is something that we need to be mindful of
something that we need to be mindful of and it’s something that the organization
and it’s something that the organization has been flagging um and and we do the
has been flagging um and and we do the end need a full scope of legal and
end need a full scope of legal and illegal deforestation to be covered in
illegal deforestation to be covered in these kinds of of regulations and
these kinds of of regulations and Frameworks I know one of the things we
Frameworks I know one of the things we looked at in Pathways as well that I
looked at in Pathways as well that I know was um a big number a big
know was um a big number a big realization actually that the amount of
realization actually that the amount of forest positive funding that we put in
forest positive funding that we put in so so funding that helps us to protect
so so funding that helps us to protect and to restore forest is vastly vastly
and to restore forest is vastly vastly outweighed by this massive amount of
outweighed by this massive amount of precisely the kinds of subsidies that
precisely the kinds of subsidies that you were talking about that incentivize
you were talking about that incentivize the conversion of forest and it’s at
the conversion of forest and it’s at least a hundred times more funding goes
least a hundred times more funding goes into those activities so really really
into those activities so really really big reforms needed to you know it’s it’s
big reforms needed to you know it’s it’s our whole way of our whole food system
our Q&A this evening is all about Twee and forests which is one of me and
and forests which is one of me and Veronica’s absolutely favorite topics
Veronica’s absolutely favorite topics we’re both I think I would say massive
we’re both I think I would say massive Tree Huggers yes I feel like I’m
Tree Huggers yes I feel like I’m comfortable saying that so the title of
comfortable saying that so the title of the Q&A we’re going to have this evening
the Q&A we’re going to have this evening is how can we stop deforestation and
is how can we stop deforestation and restore our forests around the globe so
restore our forests around the globe so R both you and me worked on a big
R both you and me worked on a big beautiful Global Forest report Forest
beautiful Global Forest report Forest Pathways report recently but we were
Pathways report recently but we were talking in that report about this real
talking in that report about this real kind of Crisis point that our forests
kind of Crisis point that our forests are at um but we both look at very
are at um but we both look at very different bits of this big broad profile
different bits of this big broad profile of forest work that goes on here at WWF
of forest work that goes on here at WWF so before we move on to questions I
so before we move on to questions I thought maybe we’d do some introductions
thought maybe we’d do some introductions and tell people what we do what we do
and tell people what we do what we do here yeah
here yeah
absolutely
absolutely so I’m going to talk I guess about the
so I’m going to talk I guess about the science work and then and then hand over
science work and then and then hand over and we’ll talk about the bigger picture
and we’ll talk about the bigger picture stuff as well so my name’s Mary gagen
stuff as well so my name’s Mary gagen and I work in the science team here at
and I work in the science team here at WWF UK so looking at the broader
I’m a slightly newer Panda more recent Panda was yeah how much work there is
Panda was yeah how much work there is that goes on around how connected what’s
that goes on around how connected what’s happening in our forests are to our food
happening in our forests are to our food system so it might it might be a
system so it might it might be a surprise to some of our um some of our
surprise to some of our um some of our folks watching so we’re going to talk
folks watching so we’re going to talk about that a bit more later on um
about that a bit more later on um actually because we spent quite a lot of
actually because we spent quite a lot of time talking about trees actually I’m
time talking about trees actually I’m just G to go ahead and say
just G to go ahead and say that so um while we’re waiting for
that so um while we’re waiting for people to join and before we go on to to
people to join and before we go on to to the main Q&A um I thought it would be
the main Q&A um I thought it would be really good to actually talk about the
really good to actually talk about the trees that were near us when we when we
trees that were near us when we when we grew up CU I know we talked about this
grew up CU I know we talked about this and that you know I remember the trees
and that you know I remember the trees from my childhood and I think they were
from my childhood and I think they were really important in turning me into
really important in turning me into somebody who wanted to work on on the SS
somebody who wanted to work on on the SS behind our our um trees and I know we
behind our our um trees and I know we both grew up in cities but cities on
both grew up in cities but cities on opposite sides of the ocean so I grew up
opposite sides of the ocean so I grew up in Manchester um in the north of of
in Manchester um in the north of of England and the in quite a suburb and
England and the in quite a suburb and you know not not in a particularly green
you know not not in a particularly green part but there were these big beautiful
part but there were these big beautiful Elm trees all along the street that I
Elm trees all along the street that I lived on and when we were kids our whole
lived on and when we were kids our whole life revolved around these Elm trees we
life revolved around these Elm trees we played games hide and seek behind them
played games hide and seek behind them and we invented this whole world where
and we invented this whole world where people lived in the bark like you do
people lived in the bark like you do when you’re were a child and then when
when you’re were a child and then when when I was about 10 like a lots of trees
when I was about 10 like a lots of trees in the UK they got Dutch elm disease and
in the UK they got Dutch elm disease and I remember really clearly the whole
I remember really clearly the whole street having to be filed in W go and
street having to be filed in W go and suddenly these trees were kind of gone
suddenly these trees were kind of gone from my life so I remember those trees
from my life so I remember those trees really clearly when I was when I was a
really clearly when I was when I was a child but what what trees were you grew
child but what what trees were you grew up in a very different place yeah so
up in a very different place yeah so mine are is the tropical forest I was
mine are is the tropical forest I was from I am from bot and I grew up in bota
from I am from bot and I grew up in bota and there um my absolute favorite tree
and there um my absolute favorite tree is the jaruma tree which the scientific
is the jaruma tree which the scientific name is copia Pata um and yeah it’s
name is copia Pata um and yeah it’s something that really connects me to
something that really connects me to home whenever I’m in Colombia whenever I
home whenever I’m in Colombia whenever I see a jumo it connects me to what I’m
see a jumo it connects me to what I’m doing it reminds me of why I love nature
doing it reminds me of why I love nature so much and how important it is to
so much and how important it is to protect a trees and ecosystem so it’s
protect a trees and ecosystem so it’s been something that has been connecting
been something that has been connecting me to this sector and this field of work
me to this sector and this field of work since I was very very young so it has a
since I was very very young so it has a very personal meaning but professional
very personal meaning but professional meaning to me um and yeah it’s it’s a
meaning to me um and yeah it’s it’s a great memory that I have whenever I see
great memory that I have whenever I see them a Juma tree are they really big
them a Juma tree are they really big trees or they yeah they’re massive trees
trees or they yeah they’re massive trees they can have like green leaves or
they can have like green leaves or silver leaves U so they can call them
silver leaves U so they can call them like the white jumo or silver jumo which
like the white jumo or silver jumo which beautiful and sometimes they call it
beautiful and sometimes they call it like the bear claw because they look
like the bear claw because they look like a bear claw they’re massive they
like a bear claw they’re massive they have five yeah they have like big ones
have five yeah they have like big ones so yeah this it’s a great one it’s a
so yeah this it’s a great one it’s a great memory for
great memory for me yeah we I think um and share our
me yeah we I think um and share our share your memories of of the trees that
share your memories of of the trees that were around you when you were a child in
were around you when you were a child in the in the chat and we’d love to love to
the in the chat and we’d love to love to hear about more trees from your
hear about more trees from your childhood um so we really want to thank
childhood um so we really want to thank you for all your thoughts and questions
you for all your thoughts and questions so lots of you over over the past few
so lots of you over over the past few months have shown how How Deeply that
months have shown how How Deeply that you care about the trees and forests in
you care about the trees and forests in your lives and these issues that that
your lives and these issues that that we’re talking about um so we’re going to
we’re talking about um so we’re going to we’re going to dive in and talk a little
we’re going to dive in and talk a little bit
bit
about the big cop going on at the moment I think how me which may I say Mary has
I think how me which may I say Mary has bravely just arrived from cop she just
bravely just arrived from cop she just landed from from a plane here so we’re
landed from from a plane here so we’re very grateful to have her and you have
very grateful to have her and you have all of the insights yes you have all of
all of the insights yes you have all of the insights from cop so we’re very much
the insights from cop so we’re very much looking forward how it was to hear how
looking forward how it was to hear how it was and and all of the events that
it was and and all of the events that happened around cop and so so trees
happened around cop and so so trees forests were a very big part of of this
forests were a very big part of of this cop I should say it’s still going on um
cop I should say it’s still going on um very often um the scientists tend to
very often um the scientists tend to leave before the whole conference
leave before the whole conference finishes because that’s when the the
finishes because that’s when the the real negotiations ramp up and we’ll be
real negotiations ramp up and we’ll be our friends who are in the negotiation
our friends who are in the negotiation teams will not be getting a lot of sleep
teams will not be getting a lot of sleep um over the next few nights um and big
um over the next few nights um and big shout out and hello hello to them and
shout out and hello hello to them and lots of love because they’re still
lots of love because they’re still working very hard so wwsp asks for
working very hard so wwsp asks for global leaders and businesses at this
global leaders and businesses at this cop was to really secure the end of
cop was to really secure the end of deforestation because something really
deforestation because something really big happened some of you fored Glasgow
big happened some of you fored Glasgow cop um that was in the UK two years ago
cop um that was in the UK two years ago will probably remember this there was
will probably remember this there was this big commitment with Glasgow leaders
this big commitment with Glasgow leaders declaration to commit to end
declaration to commit to end deforestation to Halt it and reverse it
deforestation to Halt it and reverse it by
by 2013 and actually in relation to the
2013 and actually in relation to the work that you do Veronica there was
work that you do Veronica there was quite an exciting announcement in
quite an exciting announcement in relation to to deforestation and
relation to to deforestation and conversion free action cop as well
conversion free action cop as well wasn’t there tell about that yeah
wasn’t there tell about that yeah absolutely so um it was a great news
absolutely so um it was a great news that the UK government through the defra
that the UK government through the defra department announced some additional
department announced some additional details on the UK due diligence
details on the UK due diligence regulation on Forest risk Commodities so
regulation on Forest risk Commodities so there are two points that we wanted to
there are two points that we wanted to highlight on this due diligence
highlight on this due diligence regulation because it’s been much um
regulation because it’s been much um waited for everybody we were expecting
waited for everybody we were expecting to to listen to what the UK government
to to listen to what the UK government had to say about this and so the forest
had to say about this and so the forest RIS Commodities scheme will be
RIS Commodities scheme will be introduced through the of schedule 17 in
introduced through the of schedule 17 in the environment act in 2021 and the
the environment act in 2021 and the secondary legislation is meant to
secondary legislation is meant to operationalize those Provisions um in
operationalize those Provisions um in the next parliamentary times and we got
the next parliamentary times and we got some more information on the full list
some more information on the full list of Commodities and the common in scope
of Commodities and the common in scope which will be non-dairy cattle products
which will be non-dairy cattle products so beef and leather cocoa palm and soy
so beef and leather cocoa palm and soy and this regulation is really critical H
and this regulation is really critical H because WWF has estimated that between
because WWF has estimated that between 2016 and 2018
2016 and 2018 around 21 million hectares so roughly
around 21 million hectares so roughly the area almost the size of the UK was
the area almost the size of the UK was required each year to meet UK demand for
required each year to meet UK demand for seven forestry Commodities alone so this
seven forestry Commodities alone so this is absolutely critical and we are very
is absolutely critical and we are very keen and hopeful that the UK government
keen and hopeful that the UK government can move ahead with the secondary
can move ahead with the secondary legislation that we so much need for to
legislation that we so much need for to advance on this agenda so that would
advance on this agenda so that would mean um essentially this was about
mean um essentially this was about ensuring that when we when we buy
ensuring that when we when we buy products in the UK we can be confident
products in the UK we can be confident that those products haven’t been
that those products haven’t been associated with legal deforestation
associated with legal deforestation because I think for a lot of people you
because I think for a lot of people you might not be aware that you could be
might not be aware that you could be buying something yeah that that could
buying something yeah that that could have been associated with land being
have been associated with land being cleared illegally
cleared illegally overseas um but I wanted to ask you
overseas um but I wanted to ask you about another part of of deforestation
about another part of of deforestation and conversion fre as well because it
and conversion fre as well because it that’s the that’s the legislation that
that’s the that’s the legislation that that addresses illegal deforestation but
that addresses illegal deforestation but actually there’s a bigger issue as well
actually there’s a bigger issue as well isn’t there that I know a lot of your
isn’t there that I know a lot of your your work is on because at the moment a
your work is on because at the moment a lot of our trade and a lot of our
lot of our trade and a lot of our financial and subsidy systems actually
financial and subsidy systems actually support the conversion of forest to grow
support the conversion of forest to grow food but that’s so do you want to tell
food but that’s so do you want to tell tell us a little bit more about that
tell us a little bit more about that issue so that so the legal deforestation
issue so that so the legal deforestation and and what sort of work we’re doing to
and and what sort of work we’re doing to try and ensure because really we need
try and ensure because really we need all deforestation to stop ultimately
all deforestation to stop ultimately don’t we yes and I I think as ww have
don’t we yes and I I think as ww have been we we’ve been working a lot um on
been we we’ve been working a lot um on reviewing and assessing the EU du
reviewing and assessing the EU du legislation which um is is as well very
legislation which um is is as well very relevant in the space and it’s covering
relevant in the space and it’s covering both illegal and legal deforestation
both illegal and legal deforestation mainly because of what Mary just
mainly because of what Mary just explained so we are hoping or we are
explained so we are hoping or we are identifying that the UK due diligence
identifying that the UK due diligence legislation as it is it’s only covering
legislation as it is it’s only covering illegal deforestation so there is a
illegal deforestation so there is a loophole to be addressed and and we need
loophole to be addressed and and we need to assess ways on how to then um
to assess ways on how to then um identify those legal ER ways of clear
identify those legal ER ways of clear and the Forest L because at the moment
and the Forest L because at the moment in many of the producing countries it’s
in many of the producing countries it’s not so easy to tell when the forestation
not so easy to tell when the forestation is illegal or legal um or many of the
is illegal or legal um or many of the legal Frameworks or regulations that are
legal Frameworks or regulations that are in place in those producing countries um
in place in those producing countries um are sometimes incentivizing
are sometimes incentivizing deforestation or do not have the strong
deforestation or do not have the strong robust Frameworks that we need so it is
robust Frameworks that we need so it is something that we need to be mindful of
something that we need to be mindful of and it’s something that the organization
and it’s something that the organization has been flagging um and and we do the
has been flagging um and and we do the end need a full scope of legal and
end need a full scope of legal and illegal deforestation to be covered in
illegal deforestation to be covered in these kinds of of regulations and
these kinds of of regulations and Frameworks I know one of the things we
Frameworks I know one of the things we looked at in Pathways as well that I
looked at in Pathways as well that I know was um a big number a big
know was um a big number a big realization actually that the amount of
realization actually that the amount of forest positive funding that we put in
forest positive funding that we put in so so funding that helps us to protect
so so funding that helps us to protect and to restore forest is vastly vastly
and to restore forest is vastly vastly outweighed by this massive amount of
outweighed by this massive amount of precisely the kinds of subsidies that
precisely the kinds of subsidies that you were talking about that incentivize
you were talking about that incentivize the conversion of forest and it’s at
the conversion of forest and it’s at least a hundred times more funding goes
least a hundred times more funding goes into those activities so really really
into those activities so really really big reforms needed to you know it’s it’s
big reforms needed to you know it’s it’s our whole way of our whole food system
uploa ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
our whole way of our whole food system
our whole way of our whole food system really that that comes into play when we
really that that comes into play when we
really that that comes into play when we think about these these Forest
think about these these Forest
think about these these Forest issues so I really enjoyed hearing about
issues so I really enjoyed hearing about
issues so I really enjoyed hearing about the Trees of your childhood but we
the Trees of your childhood but we
the Trees of your childhood but we should start and move on to um to some
should start and move on to um to some
should start and move on to um to some of these questions um so hi again if you
of these questions um so hi again if you
of these questions um so hi again if you are just joining us you have joined the
are just joining us you have joined the
are just joining us you have joined the WWF expert Q&A on how can we protect and
WWF expert Q&A on how can we protect and
WWF expert Q&A on how can we protect and restore our
restore our
restore our forests um and we’re going to move on I
forests um and we’re going to move on I
forests um and we’re going to move on I think I think you’ve got the first
think I think you’ve got the first
think I think you’ve got the first question I’m stop talking no wor don’t
question I’m stop talking no wor don’t
question I’m stop talking no wor don’t no I’m going to start the questions and
no I’m going to start the questions and
no I’m going to start the questions and and Mary as one of the leading authors
and Mary as one of the leading authors
and Mary as one of the leading authors of the forest Pathways report we’re very
of the forest Pathways report we’re very
of the forest Pathways report we’re very keen for her to answer some questions
keen for her to answer some questions
keen for her to answer some questions that we have so let’s get started give
that we have so let’s get started give
that we have so let’s get started give me a chance to talk about Forest now
me a chance to talk about Forest now
me a chance to talk about Forest now let’s do it so I wanted to ask you ER by
let’s do it so I wanted to ask you ER by
let’s do it so I wanted to ask you ER by asking how can we restore the forest we
asking how can we restore the forest we
asking how can we restore the forest we are implying that forests around the
are implying that forests around the
are implying that forests around the world are not in the best shape so if we
world are not in the best shape so if we
world are not in the best shape so if we look at the snapshot of the state of the
look at the snapshot of the state of the
look at the snapshot of the state of the forest and the current state up Forest
forest and the current state up Forest
forest and the current state up Forest what do we
what do we
what do we see yeah I mean there’s really no other
see yeah I mean there’s really no other
see yeah I mean there’s really no other way to say it than when when we look at
way to say it than when when we look at
way to say it than when when we look at the kind of state of play and where we
the kind of state of play and where we
the kind of state of play and where we are our forests are not in great shape
are our forests are not in great shape
are our forests are not in great shape and particularly when we look at where
and particularly when we look at where
and particularly when we look at where we are in terms of making progress
we are in terms of making progress
we are in terms of making progress towards meeting those 203 goals to do
towards meeting those 203 goals to do
towards meeting those 203 goals to do two really big things first of all
two really big things first of all
two really big things first of all actually haling deforestation and then
actually haling deforestation and then
actually haling deforestation and then giving nature space to recover and
giving nature space to recover and
giving nature space to recover and restore what what we’ve lost um and even
restore what what we’ve lost um and even
restore what what we’ve lost um and even just taking the values of forest loss
just taking the values of forest loss
just taking the values of forest loss from 2022 so when we launched our big
from 2022 so when we launched our big
from 2022 so when we launched our big Forest Pathways report we co-launched
Forest Pathways report we co-launched
Forest Pathways report we co-launched with a global assessment that happens
with a global assessment that happens
with a global assessment that happens every year called the forest exporation
every year called the forest exporation
every year called the forest exporation assessment so the forest exporation
assessment so the forest exporation
assessment so the forest exporation assessment every year look
assessment every year look
assessment every year look quantitatively across the planet and say
quantitatively across the planet and say
quantitatively across the planet and say how how much Forest have we lost where
how how much Forest have we lost where
how how much Forest have we lost where is Forest coming back and how are we
is Forest coming back and how are we
is Forest coming back and how are we tracking progress towards that 2030 goal
tracking progress towards that 2030 goal
tracking progress towards that 2030 goal so just in
so just in
so just in 2022 we lost 6.6 million hectares of
2022 we lost 6.6 million hectares of
2022 we lost 6.6 million hectares of forest and critically that primary
forest and critically that primary
forest and critically that primary tropical forest loss so our tropical
tropical forest loss so our tropical
tropical forest loss so our tropical forests are one of the most important
forests are one of the most important
forests are one of the most important Forest Types on the planet they’re where
Forest Types on the planet they’re where
Forest Types on the planet they’re where this huge amount of carbon gets stored
this huge amount of carbon gets stored
this huge amount of carbon gets stored they’re critical for stabilizing whole
they’re critical for stabilizing whole
they’re critical for stabilizing whole climate of our planet the amounts of
climate of our planet the amounts of
climate of our planet the amounts of water that move through their Forest
water that move through their Forest
water that move through their Forest their critical for the peoples who who
their critical for the peoples who who
their critical for the peoples who who live in those virs and depend on them
live in those virs and depend on them
live in those virs and depend on them and also support a huge huge amount of
and also support a huge huge amount of
and also support a huge huge amount of Nature and biodiversity so those those
Nature and biodiversity so those those
Nature and biodiversity so those those super precious primary tral forests we
super precious primary tral forests we
super precious primary tral forests we lost 4.1 million hectares an area size
lost 4.1 million hectares an area size
lost 4.1 million hectares an area size of Denmark in just one year
of Denmark in just one year
of Denmark in just one year so the position when we started that
so the position when we started that
so the position when we started that report was to say look we we’re just not
report was to say look we we’re just not
report was to say look we we’re just not making progress at the pace and the
making progress at the pace and the
making progress at the pace and the scale that we need to and critically the
scale that we need to and critically the
scale that we need to and critically the loss of that super IR replaceable
loss of that super IR replaceable
loss of that super IR replaceable primary tropical forest is is way way
primary tropical forest is is way way
primary tropical forest is is way way bigger than it needs to be and the real
bigger than it needs to be and the real
bigger than it needs to be and the real challenge is every year between now and
challenge is every year between now and
challenge is every year between now and 2030 that we don’t make progress the
2030 that we don’t make progress the
2030 that we don’t make progress the targets for the next year are harder to
targets for the next year are harder to
targets for the next year are harder to reach because we’ve got to reduce
reach because we’ve got to reduce
reach because we’ve got to reduce deforestation even more so I guess um
deforestation even more so I guess um
deforestation even more so I guess um that was that was the kind of starting
that was that was the kind of starting
that was that was the kind of starting place for for our report really wasn’t
place for for our report really wasn’t
place for for our report really wasn’t it to say what position are we in and
it to say what position are we in and
it to say what position are we in and and how do we have conversations about
and how do we have conversations about
and how do we have conversations about getting into a better place so that
getting into a better place so that
getting into a better place so that we’re not seeing those terrible results
we’re not seeing those terrible results
we’re not seeing those terrible results year on year yeah what I liked as well
year on year yeah what I liked as well
year on year yeah what I liked as well about the report is that it’s solution
about the report is that it’s solution
about the report is that it’s solution driven and action driven so although it
driven and action driven so although it
driven and action driven so although it does mention the current state of the
does mention the current state of the
does mention the current state of the forest what I really like about this
forest what I really like about this
forest what I really like about this report it goes a Step Beyond to say okay
report it goes a Step Beyond to say okay
report it goes a Step Beyond to say okay what’s needed then what are the
what’s needed then what are the
what’s needed then what are the solutions that we’re proposing what are
solutions that we’re proposing what are
solutions that we’re proposing what are the things that we’re looking in the
the things that we’re looking in the
the things that we’re looking in the ground that are working so we also have
ground that are working so we also have
ground that are working so we also have some Hope on what’s what’s coming up
some Hope on what’s what’s coming up
some Hope on what’s what’s coming up because otherwise the picture is quite
because otherwise the picture is quite
because otherwise the picture is quite Bleak and it can be very very depressing
Bleak and it can be very very depressing
Bleak and it can be very very depressing um so I like the balance that the reward
um so I like the balance that the reward
00:15:02,680 – 00:15:04,310
um so I like the balance that the reward has managed and we always describe
has managed and we always describe
has managed and we always describe forest Pathways as we were trying to
forest Pathways as we were trying to
forest Pathways as we were trying to derive a blueprints green print maybe of
derive a blueprints green print maybe of
derive a blueprints green print maybe of where we go from here um but before we
where we go from here um but before we
where we go from here um but before we before we move on to as usual we’re
before we move on to as usual we’re
before we move on to as usual we’re going to get the glue I can see it’s I’m
going to get the glue I can see it’s I’m
going to get the glue I can see it’s I’m wearing a piece of paper at me and I’m
wearing a piece of paper at me and I’m
wearing a piece of paper at me and I’m not very subtly going to do that to take
not very subtly going to do that to take
not very subtly going to do that to take it um so yeah before we move on to the
it um so yeah before we move on to the
it um so yeah before we move on to the kind of stories of Hope and restoration
kind of stories of Hope and restoration
kind of stories of Hope and restoration which like you say are super important
which like you say are super important
which like you say are super important because they are out there there some
because they are out there there some
because they are out there there some amazing amazing forest positive work
amazing amazing forest positive work
amazing amazing forest positive work going on around the world um do you want
going on around the world um do you want
going on around the world um do you want to take us through the Gloom take us
to take us through the Gloom take us
to take us through the Gloom take us through the global threats of Foresta
through the global threats of Foresta
through the global threats of Foresta facing right now good yes um so just to
facing right now good yes um so just to
facing right now good yes um so just to set the the scene before talking about
set the the scene before talking about
set the the scene before talking about the threats I just wanted to mention um
the threats I just wanted to mention um
the threats I just wanted to mention um the value of forest so forests are home
the value of forest so forests are home
the value of forest so forests are home to 47 million people they are directly
to 47 million people they are directly
to 47 million people they are directly generating over 250 billion in economic
generating over 250 billion in economic
generating over 250 billion in economic activity each year and estimated value
activity each year and estimated value
activity each year and estimated value is 50 trillion US dollar so it’s the
is 50 trillion US dollar so it’s the
is 50 trillion US dollar so it’s the double of the total value of global
double of the total value of global
double of the total value of global stocks um however they’re in they’re
stocks um however they’re in they’re
stocks um however they’re in they’re very impacted as you know by climate
very impacted as you know by climate
very impacted as you know by climate change by deforestation by degradation
change by deforestation by degradation
change by deforestation by degradation um and across the world we’re seeing uh
um and across the world we’re seeing uh
um and across the world we’re seeing uh so much damage um mainly through climate
so much damage um mainly through climate
so much damage um mainly through climate change so climate change uh as many
change so climate change uh as many
change so climate change uh as many organizations and and many stakeholders
organizations and and many stakeholders
organizations and and many stakeholders across the world have been flagging for
across the world have been flagging for
across the world have been flagging for several years is the most serious threat
several years is the most serious threat
several years is the most serious threat to forest and ecosystems in the medium
to forest and ecosystems in the medium
to forest and ecosystems in the medium term and Mary has mentioned already some
term and Mary has mentioned already some
term and Mary has mentioned already some of the impacts including Wildfire
00:16:35,269 – 00:16:35,279
of the impacts including Wildfire
of the impacts including Wildfire systems increase um in those extreme
systems increase um in those extreme
systems increase um in those extreme weather events hotter drought pest
weather events hotter drought pest
weather events hotter drought pest disease um but these are also
disease um but these are also
disease um but these are also challenges that are um linked to
challenges that are um linked to
challenges that are um linked to underlying causes of deforestation and
underlying causes of deforestation and
underlying causes of deforestation and those ones I think are the ones that are
those ones I think are the ones that are
those ones I think are the ones that are very detail uh detailedly explained in
very detail uh detailedly explained in
very detail uh detailedly explained in their report um mainly agriculture so
their report um mainly agriculture so
their report um mainly agriculture so not surprisingly um agriculture is by
not surprisingly um agriculture is by
not surprisingly um agriculture is by far the largest driver of tropical
far the largest driver of tropical
far the largest driver of tropical deforestation across the world food
deforestation across the world food
deforestation across the world food consumption has risen twice as fast as
consumption has risen twice as fast as
consumption has risen twice as fast as the global population over TW over the
the global population over TW over the
the global population over TW over the past 20 years so that sorry get that one
past 20 years so that sorry get that one
past 20 years so that sorry get that one for me again so the amount of food that
for me again so the amount of food that
for me again so the amount of food that we that we consume has gone up twice as
we that we consume has gone up twice as
we that we consume has gone up twice as fast as the over population so that’s
fast as the over population so that’s
fast as the over population so that’s massive and exactly there’s so much
massive and exactly there’s so much
massive and exactly there’s so much production happening and the
production happening and the
production happening and the environmental regulation environmental
environmental regulation environmental
environmental regulation environmental criteria the sustainability conditions
criteria the sustainability conditions
criteria the sustainability conditions are not yet in place to make sure that
are not yet in place to make sure that
are not yet in place to make sure that it’s a sustainable production and
it’s a sustainable production and
it’s a sustainable production and consumption pattern and soy cattle and
consumption pattern and soy cattle and
consumption pattern and soy cattle and palm oil are often quoted as the top
palm oil are often quoted as the top
palm oil are often quoted as the top three commodity drivers of forest and
three commodity drivers of forest and
three commodity drivers of forest and ecosystem loss which is why WWF is
ecosystem loss which is why WWF is
ecosystem loss which is why WWF is making so many or so much effort in
making so many or so much effort in
making so many or so much effort in those Commodities as well as other
those Commodities as well as other
those Commodities as well as other Commodities but has um a massive amount
Commodities but has um a massive amount
Commodities but has um a massive amount of work throughout the network to
of work throughout the network to
of work throughout the network to address many of the issues that’s
address many of the issues that’s
address many of the issues that’s happening in those
happening in those
happening in those Commodities a a one that’s massive as
Commodities a a one that’s massive as
Commodities a a one that’s massive as land grabbing and for me Colombian land
land grabbing and for me Colombian land
land grabbing and for me Colombian land grabbing is is the mainest what does
grabbing is is the mainest what does
grabbing is is the mainest what does that mean that might not if that maybe
that mean that might not if that maybe
that mean that might not if that maybe isn’t a term that that people are
isn’t a term that that people are
isn’t a term that that people are familiar with what what does land
familiar with what what does land
familiar with what what does land grabbing mean so land grabbing is um
grabbing mean so land grabbing is um
grabbing mean so land grabbing is um land clearing so clearing a piece of
land clearing so clearing a piece of
land clearing so clearing a piece of land or a land clear systems in order to
land or a land clear systems in order to
land or a land clear systems in order to it could be to expand the agricultural
it could be to expand the agricultural
it could be to expand the agricultural Frontier it could be to establish a
Frontier it could be to establish a
Frontier it could be to establish a production model so a cattle wrenching
production model so a cattle wrenching
production model so a cattle wrenching system or a livestock system or a crop
system or a livestock system or a crop
system or a livestock system or a crop um but it also and we’ve seen that
um but it also and we’ve seen that
um but it also and we’ve seen that through many of the regions that are
through many of the regions that are
through many of the regions that are facing land grabing issues it can also
facing land grabing issues it can also
facing land grabing issues it can also be a way for illegal groups to disguise
be a way for illegal groups to disguise
be a way for illegal groups to disguise a lot of the actions that they are in
a lot of the actions that they are in
a lot of the actions that they are in attempting to do so either if it is
attempting to do so either if it is
attempting to do so either if it is through corruption systems or money
through corruption systems or money
through corruption systems or money laundering a land grabbing has become a
laundering a land grabbing has become a
laundering a land grabbing has become a way to gain territorial control in many
way to gain territorial control in many
way to gain territorial control in many of the communities where the land has
of the communities where the land has
of the communities where the land has been cleared or to just maintain and
been cleared or to just maintain and
been cleared or to just maintain and continue illicit activities through that
continue illicit activities through that
continue illicit activities through that system so it’s quite a complex one it’s
system so it’s quite a complex one it’s
system so it’s quite a complex one it’s it’s one that we keep assessing and
it’s one that we keep assessing and
it’s one that we keep assessing and analyzing in the different areas of the
analyzing in the different areas of the
analyzing in the different areas of the world because it requires a very complex
world because it requires a very complex
world because it requires a very complex and comprehensive way of tackling it I
and comprehensive way of tackling it I
and comprehensive way of tackling it I guess it changes and it
guess it changes and it
guess it changes and it changes and context so but it is one
changes and context so but it is one
changes and context so but it is one that’s absolutely key for us to to H to
that’s absolutely key for us to to H to
that’s absolutely key for us to to H to keep in mind and then others that of
keep in mind and then others that of
keep in mind and then others that of course have have been flaged in
course have have been flaged in
course have have been flaged in constantly are illegal and legal ways of
constantly are illegal and legal ways of
constantly are illegal and legal ways of mining infrastructure development and
mining infrastructure development and
mining infrastructure development and illegal and legal ways of logging
illegal and legal ways of logging
illegal and legal ways of logging because sometimes we forget about the
because sometimes we forget about the
because sometimes we forget about the legal logging but many of the areas are
legal logging but many of the areas are
legal logging but many of the areas are sometimes cleared for commercial
sometimes cleared for commercial
sometimes cleared for commercial production of trees that are just simply
production of trees that are just simply
0
production of trees that are just simply not meant to be there in the first
not meant to be there in the first
not meant to be there in the first place I think it’s really interesting
place I think it’s really interesting
place I think it’s really interesting Veronica when you talk about about this
Veronica when you talk about about this
Veronica when you talk about about this as well because it really brings it
as well because it really brings it
as well because it really brings it really reminds me of one of um the key
really reminds me of one of um the key
really reminds me of one of um the key issues that we looked at in in a broader
issues that we looked at in in a broader
issues that we looked at in in a broader perspective with the pathways report
perspective with the pathways report
perspective with the pathways report that a lot of these really entrenched
that a lot of these really entrenched
that a lot of these really entrenched systems basically just don’t recognize
systems basically just don’t recognize
systems basically just don’t recognize the value of standing forests to the
the value of standing forests to the
the value of standing forests to the indigenous peoples and to the local
indigenous peoples and to the local
indigenous peoples and to the local communities who who depend on them to
communities who who depend on them to
communities who who depend on them to the wildlife to the nature Services all
the wildlife to the nature Services all
the wildlife to the nature Services all of those things that really when the
of those things that really when the
of those things that really when the forest is removed nobody ever pays that
forest is removed nobody ever pays that
forest is removed nobody ever pays that invoice the land is valued more highly
invoice the land is valued more highly
invoice the land is valued more highly for growing crops or or for the elicit
for growing crops or or for the elicit
for growing crops or or for the elicit activities that it’s involved in or for
activities that it’s involved in or for
activities that it’s involved in or for for the minerals in the ground beneath
for the minerals in the ground beneath
for the minerals in the ground beneath the forest so we really have this
the forest so we really have this
the forest so we really have this entrenched system where that total value
entrenched system where that total value
entrenched system where that total value of the forest to all of the people and
of the forest to all of the people and
of the forest to all of the people and nature and the climate climate delivery
nature and the climate climate delivery
nature and the climate climate delivery of that stored carbon and everything
of that stored carbon and everything
of that stored carbon and everything that the forest does just isn’t isn’t
that the forest does just isn’t isn’t
that the forest does just isn’t isn’t seen and it it’s going to take a really
seen and it it’s going to take a really
seen and it it’s going to take a really big change for us to shift to a value
big change for us to shift to a value
big change for us to shift to a value system where where the forest is seen
system where where the forest is seen
system where where the forest is seen for all of its different values rather
for all of its different values rather
for all of its different values rather than the commodity that it could
than the commodity that it could
than the commodity that it could produced by by crop or something like
produced by by crop or something like
produced by by crop or something like that yeah I think that was a really big
that yeah I think that was a really big
that yeah I think that was a really big um a big theme round through round
um a big theme round through round
um a big theme round through round through
through
through the yeah absolutely and I think once we
the yeah absolutely and I think once we
the yeah absolutely and I think once we value the standing forest in a in a
value the standing forest in a in a
value the standing forest in a in a sustainable way but also in a way that
sustainable way but also in a way that
sustainable way but also in a way that can compete with the other economies
can compete with the other economies
can compete with the other economies that’s where it’s going to be a um yeah
that’s where it’s going to be a um yeah
that’s where it’s going to be a um yeah starting to shift the Dynamics because
starting to shift the Dynamics because
starting to shift the Dynamics because as you say we’re not really valuing
as you say we’re not really valuing
as you say we’re not really valuing standing Forest the same way we’re
standing Forest the same way we’re
standing Forest the same way we’re valuing clear LS and actually speaking
valuing clear LS and actually speaking
valuing clear LS and actually speaking of wanting to to be hopeful that gives
of wanting to to be hopeful that gives
of wanting to to be hopeful that gives me a reminder actually to talk about two
me a reminder actually to talk about two
me a reminder actually to talk about two really positive things that that have
really positive things that that have
really positive things that that have happened cop we’re starting to see
happened cop we’re starting to see
happened cop we’re starting to see really great and innovative ideas for
really great and innovative ideas for
really great and innovative ideas for funding standing Forest there were quite
funding standing Forest there were quite
funding standing Forest there were quite a lot that emerged over over the last
a lot that emerged over over the last
a lot that emerged over over the last couple of weeks of CAU and also very
couple of weeks of CAU and also very
couple of weeks of CAU and also very very hot off the press I think the last
very hot off the press I think the last
very hot off the press I think the last update on the global stock tape was
update on the global stock tape was
update on the global stock tape was literally two hours ago and Food Systems
literally two hours ago and Food Systems
literally two hours ago and Food Systems as mentioned so it’s really nice to be
as mentioned so it’s really nice to be
as mentioned so it’s really nice to be able to see some positive elements there
able to see some positive elements there
able to see some positive elements there so I’m holding in my hand a question
so I’m holding in my hand a question
so I’m holding in my hand a question that we’ve received and I will quickly
that we’ve received and I will quickly
that we’ve received and I will quickly try and answer this so we’ve had a
try and answer this so we’ve had a
try and answer this so we’ve had a really really superb and thoughtful
really really superb and thoughtful
really really superb and thoughtful question what is the current rate of
question what is the current rate of
question what is the current rate of deforestation versus restoration so I
deforestation versus restoration so I
deforestation versus restoration so I guess somebody thank you whoever posted
guess somebody thank you whoever posted
guess somebody thank you whoever posted this question um asking you know is is
this question um asking you know is is
this question um asking you know is is this negative or or can we say it’s
this negative or or can we say it’s
this negative or or can we say it’s positive are we restoring more than
positive are we restoring more than
positive are we restoring more than we’re losing unfortunately we are not
we’re losing unfortunately we are not
we’re losing unfortunately we are not yet restoring what we are losing but
yet restoring what we are losing but
yet restoring what we are losing but there are places where Forest is
there are places where Forest is
there are places where Forest is recovering both through natural
recovering both through natural
recovering both through natural regeneration and where act through
regeneration and where act through
regeneration and where act through active restoration so that could include
active restoration so that could include
active restoration so that could include replanting trees um or actually just
replanting trees um or actually just
replanting trees um or actually just giving space for trees to to grow back
giving space for trees to to grow back
giving space for trees to to grow back to regenerate naturally and we are
to regenerate naturally and we are
to regenerate naturally and we are seeing places where forests are coming
seeing places where forests are coming
seeing places where forests are coming back to life so one of the amazing
back to life so one of the amazing
back to life so one of the amazing things about nature is that when it’s
things about nature is that when it’s
things about nature is that when it’s given space it does recover so we’re not
given space it does recover so we’re not
given space it does recover so we’re not quite there yet we are still losing more
quite there yet we are still losing more
quite there yet we are still losing more than we’re gaining but there are
than we’re gaining but there are
than we’re gaining but there are certainly countries in the world a lot
certainly countries in the world a lot
certainly countries in the world a lot of countries in the world actually that
of countries in the world actually that
of countries in the world actually that are reducing their deforestation targets
are reducing their deforestation targets
are reducing their deforestation targets and are restoring what they’ve lost so
and are restoring what they’ve lost so
and are restoring what they’ve lost so so we do have pockets of Hope which
so we do have pockets of Hope which
so we do have pockets of Hope which seges beautifully in so about ways
seges beautifully in so about ways
seges beautifully in so about ways forwards for our forest I guess yes
forwards for our forest I guess yes
forwards for our forest I guess yes perfect so on our way forward for Forest
perfect so on our way forward for Forest
perfect so on our way forward for Forest uh we know we have this incredible
uh we know we have this incredible
uh we know we have this incredible blueprint that tells Global leader
blueprint that tells Global leader
blueprint that tells Global leader businesses and people how to bring
businesses and people how to bring
businesses and people how to bring Forest Back to Life Is there anything
Forest Back to Life Is there anything
Forest Back to Life Is there anything that you think is worth highlighting
that you think is worth highlighting
that you think is worth highlighting here on that pathway of Hope on what we
here on that pathway of Hope on what we
here on that pathway of Hope on what we can do and that call to action yeah
can do and that call to action yeah
can do and that call to action yeah absolutely so you will remember having
absolutely so you will remember having
absolutely so you will remember having having written it and been on our author
having written it and been on our author
having written it and been on our author team with us um we kind of highlighted
team with us um we kind of highlighted
team with us um we kind of highlighted these three really key things um that
these three really key things um that
these three really key things um that absolutely have to happen if we are
absolutely have to happen if we are
absolutely have to happen if we are going to make progress towards those
going to make progress towards those
going to make progress towards those twin goals those those critical lines in
twin goals those those critical lines in
twin goals those those critical lines in the in the forest of halting halting
the in the forest of halting halting
the in the forest of halting halting deforestation and restoring what we’ve
deforestation and restoring what we’ve
deforestation and restoring what we’ve lost and I’m going to look back on the
lost and I’m going to look back on the
lost and I’m going to look back on the first one to what we talked about with
first one to what we talked about with
first one to what we talked about with that huge mismatch between negative and
that huge mismatch between negative and
that huge mismatch between negative and positive for funding we’ve got to see
positive for funding we’ve got to see
positive for funding we’ve got to see halting of harmful finances so so
halting of harmful finances so so
halting of harmful finances so so funding that that pays to convert Forest
funding that that pays to convert Forest
funding that that pays to convert Forest um unsustainably and causes harm and
um unsustainably and causes harm and
um unsustainably and causes harm and some of those subsidies being converted
some of those subsidies being converted
some of those subsidies being converted and repurposed to fund standing forests
and repurposed to fund standing forests
and repurposed to fund standing forests and to fund um you know what’s really
and to fund um you know what’s really
and to fund um you know what’s really important as well is to to fund forested
important as well is to to fund forested
important as well is to to fund forested Nations to make those transitions in
Nations to make those transitions in
Nations to make those transitions in trade systems that we know can happen to
trade systems that we know can happen to
trade systems that we know can happen to sustainable Forest
sustainable Forest
sustainable Forest economies kind of sitting above all of
economies kind of sitting above all of
economies kind of sitting above all of those one of the huge conclusions of the
those one of the huge conclusions of the
those one of the huge conclusions of the report was that we’ve got L to see
report was that we’ve got L to see
report was that we’ve got L to see broader delivery of rights to indigenous
broader delivery of rights to indigenous
broader delivery of rights to indigenous peoples and local communities um who
peoples and local communities um who
peoples and local communities um who live in and who depend on forests all
live in and who depend on forests all
live in and who depend on forests all around the globe and um I wanted to talk
around the globe and um I wanted to talk
around the globe and um I wanted to talk a little bit about that before I move on
a little bit about that before I move on
a little bit about that before I move on Veronica because you you know um far
Veronica because you you know um far
Veronica because you you know um far better than me that th that is a rights
better than me that th that is a rights
better than me that th that is a rights and a justice issue it comes down to
and a justice issue it comes down to
and a justice issue it comes down to climate justice but with the science hat
climate justice but with the science hat
climate justice but with the science hat on we also know when scientists look at
on we also know when scientists look at
on we also know when scientists look at how our forest are doing around the
how our forest are doing around the
how our forest are doing around the globe
globe
globe the tropical forests that are doing best
the tropical forests that are doing best
the tropical forests that are doing best are those that are in indigenous
are those that are in indigenous
are those that are in indigenous territories under the stewardship of
territories under the stewardship of
territories under the stewardship of people so deforestation rates are lower
people so deforestation rates are lower
people so deforestation rates are lower low rates of degradation are lower
low rates of degradation are lower
low rates of degradation are lower across the tropics and Indigenous
across the tropics and Indigenous
across the tropics and Indigenous territories so sitting above as an
territories so sitting above as an
territories so sitting above as an umbrella over all of these different
umbrella over all of these different
umbrella over all of these different recommendations is that delivery of
recommendations is that delivery of
recommendations is that delivery of secure and realized rights for um for
secure and realized rights for um for
secure and realized rights for um for indigenous peoples and and local
indigenous peoples and and local
indigenous peoples and and local communities and forests around the globe
communities and forests around the globe
communities and forests around the globe yeah absolutely and I think we have a
yeah absolutely and I think we have a
yeah absolutely and I think we have a final question before we wrap up so
final question before we wrap up so
final question before we wrap up so they’re asking us we had a suggestion to
they’re asking us we had a suggestion to
they’re asking us we had a suggestion to plant trees immediately everywhere is
plant trees immediately everywhere is
plant trees immediately everywhere is that the answer um I would say depends
that the answer um I would say depends
that the answer um I would say depends depends where depends how depends yeah
depends where depends how depends yeah
depends where depends how depends yeah it it I I wouldn’t say everywhere is the
it it I I wouldn’t say everywhere is the
it it I I wouldn’t say everywhere is the answer it really depends where you do it
answer it really depends where you do it
answer it really depends where you do it and how you do it so so I think um you
and how you do it so so I think um you
and how you do it so so I think um you know this is something that that I I
know this is something that that I I
know this is something that that I I hear a lot we all want to be told what
hear a lot we all want to be told what
hear a lot we all want to be told what what’s the one thing what’s the one
what’s the one thing what’s the one
what’s the one thing what’s the one thing we can do and and as humans all of
thing we can do and and as humans all of
thing we can do and and as humans all of us we like we would rather have a simple
us we like we would rather have a simple
us we like we would rather have a simple answer um and I think for a long time we
answer um and I think for a long time we
answer um and I think for a long time we were told let’s just plant plant plant
were told let’s just plant plant plant
were told let’s just plant plant plant but actually what what we know now is we
but actually what what we know now is we
but actually what what we know now is we have to plant the right tree in the
have to plant the right tree in the
have to plant the right tree in the right place for the right reasons there
right place for the right reasons there
right place for the right reasons there are some places where trees don’t grow
are some places where trees don’t grow
are some places where trees don’t grow naturally um grasslands all of these
naturally um grasslands all of these
naturally um grasslands all of these other habitats and ecosystems are are
other habitats and ecosystems are are
other habitats and ecosystems are are critically important so we don’t want to
critically important so we don’t want to
critically important so we don’t want to just have trees being planted everywhere
just have trees being planted everywhere
just have trees being planted everywhere across the planet one of the things that
across the planet one of the things that
across the planet one of the things that we think about um when we think about
we think about um when we think about
we think about um when we think about how our climate works with forests
how our climate works with forests
how our climate works with forests forests from above are actually really
forests from above are actually really
forests from above are actually really dark so if we plant forest in parts of
dark so if we plant forest in parts of
dark so if we plant forest in parts of the planet which from above are pale the
the planet which from above are pale the
the planet which from above are pale the vegetation on the land surface is pale
vegetation on the land surface is pale
vegetation on the land surface is pale which helps to reflect heat to space we
which helps to reflect heat to space we
which helps to reflect heat to space we would enhance global warming even
would enhance global warming even
would enhance global warming even further so actually we could make some
further so actually we could make some
further so actually we could make some really big mistakes if we adopted plant
really big mistakes if we adopted plant
really big mistakes if we adopted plant trees immediately everywhere yeah um
trees immediately everywhere yeah um
trees immediately everywhere yeah um countries yes but do know where and how
countries yes but do know where and how
countries yes but do know where and how immediately yes again where how and
immediately yes again where how and
immediately yes again where how and everywhere no it really depends on on
everywhere no it really depends on on
everywhere no it really depends on on the area it’s about giving trees space
the area it’s about giving trees space
the area it’s about giving trees space to recover where they would be naturally
to recover where they would be naturally
to recover where they would be naturally and then assisting that restoration and
and then assisting that restoration and
and then assisting that restoration and that recovery where we can so um again
that recovery where we can so um again
that recovery where we can so um again it’s one of those things where it’s it’s
it’s one of those things where it’s it’s
it’s one of those things where it’s it’s a little bit more complicated that we
a little bit more complicated that we
a little bit more complicated that we would all rather have naturally we would
would all rather have naturally we would
would all rather have naturally we would like a simple answer of let’s just just
like a simple answer of let’s just just
like a simple answer of let’s just just frantically plant everywhere but we know
frantically plant everywhere but we know
frantically plant everywhere but we know that actually doesn’t help us
that actually doesn’t help us
that actually doesn’t help us stabilize our climate and and restore
stabilize our climate and and restore
stabilize our climate and and restore nature if we don’t get our planting
nature if we don’t get our planting
nature if we don’t get our planting right yeah but that’s a great question
right yeah but that’s a great question
right yeah but that’s a great question thank you I think that’s the biggest
thank you I think that’s the biggest
thank you I think that’s the biggest segue just to end this on a reminder on
segue just to end this on a reminder on
segue just to end this on a reminder on the deforestation and conversion free
the deforestation and conversion free
the deforestation and conversion free agenda of this commodity supply chain
agenda of this commodity supply chain
agenda of this commodity supply chain um issues because it’s not only about
um issues because it’s not only about
um issues because it’s not only about Forest it’s about other natural
Forest it’s about other natural
Forest it’s about other natural ecosystems and it’s it’s critical that
ecosystems and it’s it’s critical that
ecosystems and it’s it’s critical that we maintain and we keep this in the
we maintain and we keep this in the
we maintain and we keep this in the narratives when discussing about this
narratives when discussing about this
narratives when discussing about this issu issues at the global level so I
issu issues at the global level so I
issu issues at the global level so I think it is a great question for us to
think it is a great question for us to
think it is a great question for us to then say we also need to ensure that
then say we also need to ensure that
then say we also need to ensure that those other natural ecosystems and non-
those other natural ecosystems and non-
those other natural ecosystems and non- wooded lands are covered into the
wooded lands are covered into the
wooded lands are covered into the narratives and the agendas that are
narratives and the agendas that are
narratives and the agendas that are discussing this great issue um in the
discussing this great issue um in the
discussing this great issue um in the international force and particularly so
international force and particularly so
international force and particularly so important in um in the Amazon region
important in um in the Amazon region
important in um in the Amazon region where we know we’ve heard some real
where we know we’ve heard some real
where we know we’ve heard some real progress and deforestation rates coming
progress and deforestation rates coming
progress and deforestation rates coming down in in some ecosystems but then
down in in some ecosystems but then
down in in some ecosystems but then going up massively in other types of
going up massively in other types of
going up massively in other types of ecosystems the SAR the types so what we
ecosystems the SAR the types so what we
ecosystems the SAR the types so what we and I when I when I hear this word
and I when I when I hear this word
and I when I when I hear this word Veronica reminds me of how unbelievably
Veronica reminds me of how unbelievably
Veronica reminds me of how unbelievably difficult your job is what we need to do
difficult your job is what we need to do
difficult your job is what we need to do is make sure that when we halt
is make sure that when we halt
is make sure that when we halt deforestation in one area it doesn’t
deforestation in one area it doesn’t
deforestation in one area it doesn’t just spill over to another area it must
just spill over to another area it must
just spill over to another area it must feel like you’re chasing constantly to
feel like you’re chasing constantly to
feel like you’re chasing constantly to try and make sure that you don’t get
try and make sure that you don’t get
try and make sure that you don’t get that that spillage as it’s referred to
that that spillage as it’s referred to
that that spillage as it’s referred to into other biomes not a simple problem
into other biomes not a simple problem
into other biomes not a simple problem the puzzle the puzzle which again is
the puzzle the puzzle which again is
the puzzle the puzzle which again is shown in the report I think it’s a great
shown in the report I think it’s a great
shown in the report I think it’s a great way to understand um how to address the
way to understand um how to address the
way to understand um how to address the yeah so I guess we are just about out of
yeah so I guess we are just about out of
yeah so I guess we are just about out of time um so I’m going to thank you all
time um so I’m going to thank you all
time um so I’m going to thank you all thank you to everybody who tuned in and
thank you to everybody who tuned in and
thank you to everybody who tuned in and submitted questions today we we’ve
submitted questions today we we’ve
submitted questions today we we’ve really really enjoyed reading your
really really enjoyed reading your
really really enjoyed reading your questions and and your comments and we
questions and and your comments and we
questions and and your comments and we really hope that we leave you a bit more
really hope that we leave you a bit more
really hope that we leave you a bit more hopeful about the future of our forests
hopeful about the future of our forests
hopeful about the future of our forests um yeah we do like Veronica said we do
um yeah we do like Veronica said we do
um yeah we do like Veronica said we do know what we need to do we do have ways
know what we need to do we do have ways
know what we need to do we do have ways to move forward um and we have examples
to move forward um and we have examples
to move forward um and we have examples of places where forests are being
of places where forests are being
of places where forests are being brought back to life around world and
brought back to life around world and
brought back to life around world and we’re seeing the recovery of Nature and
we’re seeing the recovery of Nature and
we’re seeing the recovery of Nature and the recovery um of those those beautiful
the recovery um of those those beautiful
the recovery um of those those beautiful forest
